Ganz Osteotomy
Reinhold Ganz (1939-, Germany) has a lot of research on hip joint sparing surgeries; He is a surgeon who put forward new theories about the causes of calcification in the hip joint and became a pioneer by developing new surgical techniques in this regard.
One of the surgical techniques he developed is the Ganz osteotomy, which is named after him. This surgical technique is a method used in the treatment of hip developmental delays in young adults (adolescents) and adult patients. It is known that hip developmental delays, which could not be diagnosed and treated properly in childhood, cause hip calcification in the early period. Ganz osteotomy aims to correct this growth retardation by changing the shape of the underdeveloped pelvic socket (acetabulum).
Changing the shape of the pelvic socket is possible with 4 different bone incisions made around the socket. One of these bone incisions passes through the growth plates that provide the development of the nest. In order not to damage the growth plate, Ganz osteotomy is not a recommended surgery for young children. In general, it can be applied safely in patients over 12 years of age.
